Baku and Tashkent set to develop rail freight transport

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan discussed increasing the volume of freight transported by rail in their respective territories.
The discussion took place in Tashkent during a meeting of the leaders of the CJSC of Azerbaijan Railways and the JSC of Uzbekistan Railways.
Discussing the development of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijani and Uzbek Railways, the parties noted the effective measures taken for the development of the international multimodal route “Asia-Pacific-China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia- Turkey-Europe”.
The parties have considered technological cooperation between the railway infrastructures of the two countries. They affirmed their willingness to provide technical assistance in the repair of railway vehicles as well as the development of railway infrastructure.
In addition, participants highlighted the importance of continuing to interact with international and multimodal transport corridor actors.
“It will increase the volume of freight transportation, speed up the passage of container trains and organize combined freight traffic,” they said.
A working group headed by the heads of railway departments of both countries was established to increase freight traffic and resolve bilateral issues. Furthermore, the parties agreed to hold the next meeting of the working group at the end of April in Baku.
It should be noted that the volume of trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan amounted to 111.9 million dollars in 2021. Currently, about 195 Azerbaijani companies are represented in Uzbekistan, 69 of which have a capital common and 126 have 100% Azerbaijani capital.
