The world’s first hydrogen cargo bike is the future of transportation because it works without batteries!
StudioMOM’s LAVO bike is the world’s first hydrogen-powered bike, requiring no heavy batteries, particles, or CO2 emissions to operate.
These days, it seems that the bicycle is the preferred mode of transportation in crowded cities. Traffic is no joke and public transport has seen major changes since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, so people are taking to the streets with shiny electric and portable bikes. While bikes are generally more environmentally friendly than cars and trucks, they come with their own set of setbacks. Becoming the world’s first hydrogen-powered bike, StudioMOM’s LAVO bike is a small solution to a big problem.
Requiring no heavy batteries, particles or CO2 emissions, the LAVO bike was designed to bring us, as StudioMOM says, “one more step towards a zero emissions society”. Obtaining hydrogen from water and solar power, the LAVO bike is equipped with small hydrogen tanks that power the bike for its operation.
LAVO’s proprietary energy storage system converts electricity from solar panels using an electrolyzer that splits water into its components hydrogen and oxygen, moving them to a long-term storage system that contains a metal alloy to produce hydrogen.
Requiring only ten minutes of charging, the LAVO bike covers a range of approximately 150 km before recharging. Built using lightweight materials, the LAVO bike retains cargo construction to meet the base weight that comes with a hydrogen-based system.
Describing the choice to make the LAVO a cargo bike, StudioMOM notes: âLong range cargo solutions, in particular, require a lot of energy. Then an extra 1.2kg hydrogen tank is surely better than an extra battery which weighs 6kg. From its modular assembly system to its ergonomic construction, the LAVO bike was designed less like a traditional cargo bike and more like an innovative mode of transportation – LAVO was designed for change.
