Unifeeder decarbonizes with biofuel from VARO Energy

Global feeder and short sea shipping company, Unifeeder Group, has refueled its first truly sustainable 100% biofuel from VARO Energy in the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This is the first biofuels collaboration between Unifeeder and VARO Energy, which supports both companies’ ambition to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of European transport and improve the environmental impact of the shipping industry. .

In September 2021, feeder ship Elbete was fueled with biofuel B50 (50%). It then underwent a scheduled overhaul of the main engine, which allowed testing of B100 biofuel (100%). Unifeeder has now stored 400 million tons of VARO Energy’s advanced renewable biofuel B100A for Elbeteof the recent call at the port of Rotterdam.

VARO Energy’s advanced biofuels are produced from certified raw materials labeled as waste or residue. B100 biofuel reduces CO2 up to 90% lower well-to-exhaust emissions and virtually eliminates SOX emissions.

Unifeeder – owned by global supply chain solutions leader DP World – is positioned as a sustainability leader in shipping and is fully dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet of at least 50% by 2040.

Hans Staal, Director of Fuel Supply at Unifeeder, said: “Being able to operate our vessels on 100% biofuel is a real game-changer and a major stepping stone on the Unifeeder Group’s journey to net zero emissions. We salute the support and constructive approach of the ship’s owners, Elbdeich Reederei, and look forward to implementing biofuels on many more ships in our fleet in 2022.”

“This is the energy transition in action. A fundamental part of our strategy is to enable our customers to decarbonize by providing them with solutions for their cleaner energy needs. By working with them and providing new, cleaner energy products, together we can accelerate the transition to new solutions the world needs. It is our privilege to serve Unifeeder and we are delighted with this new collaboration,” commented Dev Sanyal, CEO of VARO Energy.

This latest announcement from Unifeeder follows the launch last year of its True Emissions Tracker, a tool that allows users to calculate greenhouse gas emissions at the specific level of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). , giving businesses deeper insight into the carbon impact of their business. .
