What to Look for in Senior Transportation Services

Seniors who no longer drive still have places to go and things to do.

It is important to know what to look for in a personal transportation service. Ideally, it’s best to find a company that will get one straight from point A to point B. Local professional transportation companies can provide transportation not only for medical appointments, but also for family events, trips to the casino and the races. Look for companies that are CPR and first aid certified, fully vaccinated, insured, provide free estimates, and are always on time.

There are also physical limitations to consider. Do you need help or special accommodation? Will your insurance cover some or all of the costs? Medicaid covers emergency transportation and non-emergency medical transportation for scheduled appointments, while Medicare only covers emergency medical trips, such as ambulance services. Some health insurance policies cover transportation to medical appointments. Be sure to check with your insurance representative to find out what coverage you have.

A great resource is the Area Agency on Aging. The Solano County Agency on Aging can be contacted at 707-784-8960 or online at www.aaans.org. Your local aging agency can help you find resources to help you with transportation and ways to stay healthy and connected at home.

Local transit companies often offer discounted transportation for seniors as well. Fairfield and Suisun Transit can be reached at 707-422-2877 or www.fasttransit.org. The Vacaville City Coach website is www.citycoach.com or call 707-449-6000.

However you choose to get around, it’s important to stay active and connected. Learning to navigate transportation will help you maintain your independence and dignity.
